How to have a Strong Relationship with God
1. Set Out an Alone Time with God
If you are committed to seeking how to have a strong relationship with God, you have to set out frequent quality time with Him. Like any other relationship, spending time together to know one another deeply improves the relationship significantly. In essence, family relationships are tightly knit because the members spend most of their time in their lives together. This closeness nurtures the relationship and deepens knowledge of the other party’s personality. God desires a personal close relationship with us so let us create the time.
2. A Good Prayer Always
Most people pray before they have a meal a quick short traditional prayer that they can say without thinking. The problem is we say it so fast and do not have the time to contemplate on what we are actually saying or the meaning of the words. No one would like loved ones and friends to talk to us in that manner. Try to make meaningful prayer and emphasis on every statement in prayer. From prayer for meals, you can then advance to other issues and spend more effort in what you are saying.
3. Involve God in Your Emotions
Be quick to involve God by contacting Him anytime you have an issue such as worry, stress or anger. Instead of informing or reporting to Him, seek His opinion of what He may do for you or for you to do. The result will be you will not be thinking or worrying about your problems but praying about them. This is a choice of making God part of your emotions. The outcome is a peaceful and joyous life without worry, anger, fear or nervousness.
4. No Bible No Bed
This rule will constrain you to discipline yourself into reading your Bible before going to bed. You may also choose to include a morning rule where you shall not have breakfast before you read the Bible. It is a common phrase people use among cell prayer groups and it stuck with me. If you can hold yourself in obedience to this, you will be reading more of the Bible than you ever planned. Within no time, you will be used to reading your Bible before you get to bed and before breakfast. Most importantly is that you have conditioned your body to what you know is important to you. As a result, you will be spending more time which is a vital step on how to have a strong relationship with God.
5. Take Care What You Feed Your Mind
Always watch whatever you are filing your mind in television shows and movies. Also, take care of whatever you do in your free time for hobbies including things you listen to. The reason is our minds are quickly captured and controlled by that which is in our environment often. Simply ask yourself God would be comfortable to be present with you while doing those things. If He would not enjoy it then ignore and stop doing it. The amazing fact is He is right there always watching so ensure He does not leave. Only focus on that which pleases Him.
6. Learn Something New in Religion
Learning something new keeps you obsessed about things concerning God. You may, for example, read about old saints, the history of the church and the spread of the gospel across the globe, Bible stories whether in books or movies. As you expand your knowledge on God you will strengthen your relationship with Him.
7. Embrace Some Changes
To improve and have a strong relationship with God, you should adapt to a new way of prayer such as breaking into worship music as you get to prayer. You may also disrupt your normal routine to include prayer, meditation, and reading or worship songs. This new idea will help to spice up the relationship making you crave for more and not get used to some boring stuff like repetitive traditions.
8. Reverent Places
There are places where you feel His presence close. Identify these places and spend more time there. Having read about testimonies of other people, I explored nature woods out of congested populations and realized the feeling of His love most. Since then I carry my Bible into such places and walk as I talk with God. Church where other worshippers are present reverent and prayerful also weighs heavy on me. These are my suggestions to you so find a place like a prayer retreat center, a prayer room in College or any other place you feel His presence is comfortable and close.
Always remember to maintain a two-way communication where you pay attention to what God wants you to hear. Just as you nurture a relationship with a friend, God wants to tell you how He loves you and what He’d want you to do or not to do as He becomes your guide. Listening is a crucial step when seeking how to have a strong relationship with God. It may be via an audible voice to a few people but mostly through thoughts, feelings, other people, music, nature and various circumstances.
Always be committed to taking action whenever you hear God’s voice. When you feel his guidance, act immediately in obedience. You may only have enough insight for a step but your obedience will open the way for more direction.
